Catch of a Lifetime!
Well, folks, I’m here to tell you that fishing is so easy and fun. Fishing also helps you relax and commune with nature, which is more important than we realize. Especially with the stress and challenges we all face in the day-to-day world we live in. Also, don’t let your buddies tell you you can’t catch any fish! And if they try, prove them wrong just like I did!
I believe it was around June 21, 2013, we set out on Lake Marquez to have some fun on the water and do some serious fishing. I’m not the most skilled angler but they were convinced I could not outfish them because my technique was so different from theirs.
They would tease me about how I tied my hook on and how I baited the worm on my hook, as we primarily used artificial worms for bait. They were relentless! They just knew I wasn’t going to catch any fish, let alone a big one. This particular day we were fishing the banks and I’d heard the stories from professional anglers about how bank fishing and boat docks are great places to catch good bass, and of course, my buddies were all over me because I did not want to fish the banks. I knew I could catch more grassy moss than fish. So, after about an hour or two, once I got tired of catching grassy moss, I decided to fish in the deeper waters far away from the moss and grasses obnoxiously tangling my line.
Fishing was pretty fair that day as we all caught our fair share of largemouth bass which weighed anywhere from 2 lbs to 4 lbs each. I wasn’t keeping track of who had caught the biggest fish all day. But they sure did! All day long they were sure theirs was always the biggest fish. All of a sudden something hit my line with such force that it almost jerked my pole out of my hand, but I knew then the fight was on and I wasn’t letting this baby go, even if it meant I would go swimming! It had to be the fish of the day. I finally got it in the boat after about 10 minutes, and the look on their face was priceless. So, we pulled the scale out to weigh it. I was so proud, a whooping 9 Lbs 15 oz, which is that lake’s record. That record still stands today.
I am not one that enjoys mounting fish as a trophy, because what’s the point really? Instead, we took a photograph of Big Mama and then released her into the lake. That way she is there to continue spawning and creating more beautiful catches like herself!
So, for all you young and inexperienced anglers out there just remember it doesn’t take professional angling skills, even though I’m sure that can help, it just takes being in the right location at the right time. So get out and have some fun!
