Camping With My Son
May 9, 2023

In 1984, I asked my son to visit me in Kentucky. I had to fly him from Texas to Kentucky, it was his first time ever to travel on an airplane by himself, but he had supervision from the stewardess of American Airlines, and I had to be at the terminal for his handoff. American Airlines agreed to the handoff of parent-to-parent. While he was traveling to Kentucky, I was busy planning our camping trip.

First, I had to pick up our little pop-up camper so we’d have a place to sleep! I did not own one, but I rented one for three days at a reasonable charge, and it was a perfect fit for my 1984 blue 4×4 Toyota pickup. Then it was time for grocery shopping, which was treacherous because I had to please an eleven-year-old for three days. You know all the food was healthy. As soon as I picked up my son from the airport, we were on our way to the beautiful landscape of Kentucky.

Camping in Kentucky is some of the most beautiful scenery anyone has ever put their eyes on, especially during the early fall, when the leaves changing color is simply breathtaking. My son and I found a beautiful area for camping. Due to the early fall coolness, we unfolded the camper, set up our sleeping quarters, unrolled our sleeping bags, and started gathering wood for the campfire. There is nothing better than sitting around a campfire in the evening and thinking about family ties and experiences. Some of the best memories any family can share are the fun and laughter that goes with camping and being in the great outdoors.

I would always take a compass, binoculars, and a lighter in my backpack, I had a change of clothes for us both. Another item I like to carry is orange marking tape; it’s great for visual marking, so no one gets lost! Besides, it gives that little one something to do while hiking. Matches back then were a commodity that we kept in a waterproof bottle just in case we stumbled into a creek somewhere! Not a bad idea, even in the modern times we live in today.

As we were walking, I kept his attention by pointing out the different birds, animals, and squirrels. I was pointing out the different deer tracks, which one indicated a doe or buck. All of which was creating an education about the outdoors and memories that will last long after I’m gone. My point in this story is to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, but don’t forget to include the whole family, as the memories will last forever.
